Welcome to Tinos

Part of the Cyclades in the Aegean sea, Tinos is a Greek island just 20-30 minutes by boat from Mykonos, which hosts the nearest interantional airport. It can also be reached from the mainland (2-5 hours from Rafina or Pireaus) and is very close to the islands of Andros, Delos and Syros.

Famous for the church of Panagia Evagelistria, built after the discovery of the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, Tinos is a major pilgrimage site, home to a Roman Catholic and a Greek Orthodox community that have coexisted here harmoniously for centuries - a historical inheritance from Venetian times (1390-1715).

Apart from its countless churches and chapels of both faiths, the visitor can also see notable samples of Venetian architecture such as the Exomvourgo fortification (on one of the island's highest peaks), or some of the hundreds of the beautiful dovecots scattered around the island.

Furthermore, Tinos has been the birthplace of many a skillful sculptor and painter for thousands of years, as can be testified  by the collection of the local museums of marble sculpture and art, but also by original and restoration works worldwide, including some on the Acropolis Hill of Athens. Other arts shine in Tinos too during the summer, when numerous exhibitions, concerts and festival events take place.

Last but not least, its numerous villages call for their hidden culinary treasures, based on traditional recipes and prepared with local products, to be discovered by the most curious and demanding palates, whilst the opportunity to sample high-quality local beer or wine should by no means be missed.
